There are some big blues fans in Finland and some damn good blues musicians too! ...Jukka Juhola—the hard rocking bluesman from the tiny Finnish village of Mustio (black river in English) has put out two CDs of raucous, raw and unrefined big blues noises that have the verve and power of some of the Fat Possum releases. He sings his blues based ramblings in a rusty throaty howl that reverberates around his over-amplified blues guitar which in turn is driven along by a hard hitting rhythm section and the full blown harp played by his cousin Kisko Kid. Played at high volume, these CDs remind me of the throbbing exuberant vitality of some of the best Fat Possum albums. Not for purists of course but I think Junior Kimbrough and RL Burnside would have dug the mess o’noise Jukka Johola serves up on these two CDs.
"Black River Bluesman don't play no pretty music. Their blues are raw and powerful, played straight from the heart. Black River Bluesman brought the house down with their performance at Torun Blues Meeting this November (2004) and people went crazy. This is the blues played the way I like." Przemek Draheim, "Glosem Bluesa"
