The unsung Crescent City bandleader Paul Gayten made the first New Orleans R&B recordings of the post war era and had the first local hits there in 1947. As a producer, he was responsible for grooming hit singers such as Annie Laurie, Larry Darnell, Chubby Newsome, Bobby Charles and Clarence "Frogman" Henry and became an important individual in the Chess empire before forming his own label in the late 1960s. This thirty-track compilation traces the first half of his high-voltage career in the recording business and proves how necessary he was to the birth and development of New Orleans R&B and rock 'n' roll.

This Rocks, make no mistake about it, this is hard, dirty and rockin, they literally stormed Hemsby late on the Saturday afternoon. What suprises me is that the album manages to capture the pure energy of the live set not all bands manage that. I know that there are some 45's available prior to this but this is the first CD album by the band. The album kicks off with a cover, one of only five out of the 15 tracks, I Got Love If you Want It, we are probably more familiar with the Warren Smith rockabilly bopper, but here we get a bluesier bopper complete with harmonica & heavy guitars and a superb bass chugging along.

The blues of North Mississippi are surely the foundation of This is Your Chance, France Baby but the members of The Fried Okra Band are just as sure Copenhagen-born and raised. Yet the first album from the danish band consists of twelve tracks which salutes the Blues style that has sprung from the Hill Country in North Mississippi.

The album presents very personal interpretations of songs by such artist as R.L. Burnside and Robert Belfour among others. The band follows the line of one- or two chord songs played raw and with as much energy as possible. On top of that producer Jarno Varsted hasn'´t been afraid of adding a sampling, odd organs or just a weird noise here and there. And that's the point! The Fried Okra Band admires and respect the american artists but believes it is in their spirit to add a personal touch. The sound of the entire record is therefore raw and electric recorded partly live and partly in the studio.
