A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to get the job of guitarist with Mike Sanchez, when Andy Silvester had to have an operation on his arm. I was a big fan, and by going to lots of gigs, got to know the guys and Andy quite well. Peter Green is my guitar hero, and Andy was good friends with him during the 60's. I would often pester him, and he used to tell me some great stories about the band and what was going on at the time. I'd spoken to Andy about getting my own band together, and the difficulty of finding young guys into the right music. He put me in touch with his nephew, Jesse Webb who turned out to be Stan Webbs son also! Small world! I met up with Jess a couple of times, and his playing was great, a real original sounding rawness and relaxed feel on the beat. I always wanted to get a band together that started in the right place-the blues. So many bands play original songs, which is great, but I always feel that they lack the groove. All the memorable bands started off playing the blues- The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac etc, and I think the reason they are so much better than any modern band is that they play the songs with a feel. Too many bands rely on structure and effects, whereas the old guys just used to churn out the tracks and make them move, which comes from playing R&B. Because of this, we thought it would be a good idea to start with the basics, getting us playing well as a band, and getting that groove going. The best stuff for that is the simple yet effective 50's chicago blues, stuff like those Freddie King instrumentals. Also, no one else seems to be covering this area of R&B on the circuit. We needed a good piano player. I'd heard through other people I worked with, of a young guy playing boogie woogie who would be into the stuff we were doing, Matt Foundling. He was playing with King Pleasure and The Biscuit Boys, and I went to see him at Londons 100 Club. I was blown away with his playing, and approached him after the gig, and had a chat about the possibility of getting something together. We had a couple of rehearsals, and got Craig Rhind in on bass, who I'd worked with in a few different bands before. So we recorded a CD, and hopefully we'll see you at a gig soon!

I've been following the career of Dirty Robbers guitar ace Oliver Darling for some while now,from his time with The Cadillac Kings,more recently as a member of Mike Sanchez Band,as well as solo and duo sets.He is a major talent,one of the most gifted and authentic rock n roll guitarists for many years.Here with his band,which I first saw at the Gloucester Blues Festival a couple of years back,is a young and very talented band who I'm sure will grow in fame in years to come.This is a cracking release, that although mainly covers brilliantly played mind you, gives a great taster to how good they are live.I recommend this album to all music lovers.Here is what roots and rock n roll is all about,and a young band coming like a breath of fresh air to fill our speakers with their wonderful brand of rockin' rhythms.

Cracking album - and recently caught the lads live as well, top show - the closing Elmore James tune is a killer, pure Greeny-era Fleetwood Mac - great slide and also piano by Matt Foundling. Highly recommended release!
