'The Rockabilly Combo, The Greyhounds can be described as the farest northern band of the German scene. My name is Andy Kock, I am the drummer of the band and somehow they made me write this biography about us. To do so I have to go back into the past:'
'Everything started in summer ’97, when Ulf Mentges, Herbert Stäcker and me met at Flensurg for a music rehearsal. Back that time, Herbert had no experience in playing with a band. Ulf had been playing with a friend as a duet (two guitars and changing vocals, soft rock’n’roll). I already had some experience with the Rail Rockers from Flensburg. Well, our first rehearsal was surprisingly well – if you don’t mention the wrong accords and the pitch. We decided to found a Rockabilly trio with the name Boppin’ Passions.
I would like to mention that this was the time when we recorded the tracks for our first 7“ single. It was released as R-504 at Willie Lewis’ US-Label, Rockabilly Recording Company Denver, Colorado, with the name „Little Bop Baby“. What we didn’t know then was that this would be Lewis’ last single production.
As Ulf was definitely better in singing than in guitar playing we decided to engage another guitar player for the band. So in autumn ’99, Nils Anderson joined us which turned out to be a real fortune for us.
The band was on a turning point at that time! Until then we mainly played authentic rockabilly but now we wanted to change the style. Herbert Stäcker, whose roots are mainly in neo rockabilly had written some new songs in that style and they proved to be very well accepted from our fans.
From that day on that was the beginning of a new very own style. Nils was so good on the guitar that he took over the lead guitar in all tracks. Herbert’s abilities in writing songs increased by every song he wrote and so he just went on composing.
Many new songs were created from rock’n’roll/hillbilly to neo rockabilly. For our new style of rock’n’roll we decided that we needed another band name. So the Greyhounds were founded. While the Boppin’ Passions stood for simple authentic rockabilly and soft ballads, the new sound of the Greyhounds was completely different. Latest concerts showed that this decision was right.
The new CD album of the Greyhounds „Nightlife“ has already been released on Andy Widder’s Part Records. I must admit that we are a little bit proud of that. Okay, enough of my talks. I would be glad to see you all again on our live gigs (also in the north).
See ya !
