A paperback-sized 4CD box set complete with 68 page booklet including comprehensive track by track analysis of all 109 songs.

The History of Rhythm & Blues series of CDs is a cross-label project that attempts to chronicle the rise of R&B from a historical perspective. Its aim is to demonstrate the breadth of new forms which arose from the fusion of the various styles and to showcase the most influential records while highlighting many of the more obscure discs, whose importance to the story is less well-known.

Rhythm & Blues was one of the most identifiable musical art forms of the 20th Century, with an enormous influence on the development of both the sound and attitude of modern music. The History of Rhythm and Blues series of CDs investigates the accidental synthesis of jazz, gospel, blues, ragtime, country, pop and latin into a definable form of black music, which in turn would influence pretty well all popular music from the 1950s to the present. It is the first attempt to put together a comprehensive cross-label compilation showcasing the most important and influential records in the rise of Rhythm & Blues.

Volume Three investigates the growing urbanisation of the music; the impact on white teenagers; the prominence of the vocal groups; the gradual transition towards a more soulful expression of the blues. There is a detailed examination of the various rhythms that lie behind the music from Rumba Shuffle through New Orleans to Twist Beat.

"There’s so little on this box set that I wouldn’t be overjoyed to play you… an absolutely essential purchase… as good as any (other sets) and probably better than all…indispensable music… thoroughly, thoroughly recommended"
Mark Lamarr BBC Radio Two

"Fellow addicts will already have many of the tracks, but purchasing them again to have them put in the context of blues development should be a joy rather than a hardship.…compiled with forensic knowledge and obvious loving respect ...As a whole package, it is irresistible and should be an essential on the shopping list of all self respecting r’n’b junkies"
David Innes R2 *****

"A superb collection of highly energetic music … expertly annotated… cannot be ignored by anyone with an interest in black music or American history"
Het Parool, Amsterdam

"This compilation traces a remarkable... path to the hybridisation of pop and rock that would come to dominate the planet…gives a direction of travel to fan and critics alike and, as such, comes highly recommended."
Phil Jackson Blues From The South

"Among a plethora of such comps…frankly, its probably the best of its kind. Whether you want to learn more about the genre or have been listening for years, this collection leaves others eating its dust".
Laith Al-Kaisy - Record Collector*****

"Diverse and revelatory, it shows how R&B, like most strands of America's music, is woven from several different sources. Each installment is almost a history lesson in its own right… It's all pretty impressive and its difficult to imagine any set doing a better job of tracing the roots of R&B".
Steve Leggett – All Music Group

Processing the first Rhythm And Blues box set nearly ended this writer’s marriage…savvy selections from all the big-hitters…it’s very much the real deal
Henry Yates – Classic Rock
