The complete 1957 recordings. 3 cd set, 8 page booklet, full '57 discography. These were the recordings that made him a national, and indeed international star.

1957: The breakthrough year.

After having served his apprenticeship on local West Texas radio in the early 1950s, Buddy Holly spent a year as a solo artist with the unsympathetic Nashville arm of mighty US Decca in 1956 (see El Toro ETCD 1012) which not only proved disastrous commercially, but also denied him the artistic freedom which he desired in order to carve his own niche in popular music. Having learned a valuable lesson in Owen Bradley's clock-watched studio, in early 1957 Buddy Holly formed his own group, The Crickets, and began utilising the well-equipped recording facility belonging to Norman Petty in Clovis, to produce finished masters for the Brunswick and Coral labels, which would include influential rock 'n' roll classics such as "That'll Be The Day", "Peggy Sue", "Not Fade Away", "Oh Boy!" and "Maybe Baby" - all of which can be found on this entertaining and important compilation.

Like Eddie Cochran in California, Buddy Holly enjoyed being a creative musician perhaps more than being a famous recording star, and much of his short life was spent in the recording studio not only rehearsing and recording his own tracks, but also providing accompaniment to the stream of vocalists that stepped through the sound-proofed doors. This three CD set (90 tracks!!) Provides a distillation of the high-points of the annus mirabilis which was 1957, featuring the complete recordings marketed as both The Crickets and as Buddy Holly - as well as a wealth of tracks on which Buddy, J.I. and Joe B. backed those other country, pop and rock 'n' roll singers, along with the soundtracks from TV shows, on-air interviews and amusingly-tailored promo jingles to massage the egos of various music industry figures. These were the recordings that made Buddy Holly and The Crickets national, and indeed international, stars.

Things would never be the same again...

Buddy Holly has come to be known as one of the foremost performers and innovators of the first wave of rock 'n' rollers in the 1950s.

Among the very first inductees into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in January 1986, along with Elvis, Jerry Lee, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Ray Charles, Buddy Holly has come to be known as one of the foremost performers and innovators of the first wave of rock 'n' rollers in the 1950s, even though his actual recording career lasted less than three years before being cut short by his death in an horrific plane crash. Perhaps revered even more in Europe than in his home country, singer-songwritermusician- producer Buddy inspired The Beatles and the Rolling Stones and their like much more than even Elvis ever could.

This compilation features the complete 1956 recordings of Buddy Holly - his first as a solo artist - and includes all the surviving masters from his three Nashville sessions for US Decca, together with his first demo sessions cut at Norman Petty's state-of-the-art recording studio in Clovis, New Mexico, and home recordings from Lubbock.
In addition to Buddy and his usual cohorts, such as Jerry Allison, Sonny Curtis and Don Guess, the tracks also include the accompaniment of the famed Nashville "A" Team, boasting Floyd Cramer, Harold Bradley and the always superb Grady Martin.

The Hometown Gambler's first CD "Takin' Car Of Busines on El Toro records (2005) is one of the label's best sellers ever but the CD still didn't show the band's explosive and own blend of country music, western swing, rhythm and blues, jazz, rock'n roll and rockabilly that the band delivers on stage.

The little combo (electric guitar, rhythm guitar, harmonica and stand up bass) has continued developing their roots style to get that great vintage sound which is now their trade mark!! Belgium’s Hometown Gamblers burst onto the music scene in 1998 when brothers Guy and Yves De Caluwé decided to set up a rockabilly band. Yves and Guy were hooked to rockabilly and rock n’ roll music ever since they were youngsters. Their father’s record collection and also the influence of their good friend Rockin’ Rudy, a famous DJ in the rockabilly music scene, helped them to dig deeper into roots music. The guys recognize their roots from a wide field of good and real music - country, western swing, rhythm and blues, jazz, rock'n roll and rockabilly. Artists like Johnny Horton, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Buddy Holly, Johnny Burnette trio and many more changed their life forever.
In the early years of the Hometown Gamblers, the line-up changed a few times but in the year 2002 everything fall into place when the right people were found. It soon became clear that there was no place for drums in the band. From that moment, the line-up consists of Guy De Caluwé on double bass, Jurgen Van Poppel on lead, baritone and steel guitars, Jeffrey Thielens on harmonica and Yves De Caluwé on rhythm guitar and vocals.
So far the set list consisted of classic tunes only. But it soon became clear that the Hometown Gamblers had more up their sleeve. The band started to write original songs. Yves turned out to be a good songwriter and with the help of his brother Guy and Jurgen a lot of songs were written in a short time. After some months of rehearsing the original songs were included in the live set list and they were very much appreciated by the audience.
In the fall of 2004 the Hometown Gamblers got to back-up the Seatsniffers and their Guitar player / Singer “Walter Broes “heard the songs and liked them. They asked Walter, who’s also a well known producer, to help them with the production of a full CD. Soon, after some months of rehearsing and some help from Walter with the lyrics and musical arrangements, the guys went to the studio to record their first full album. The recordings were finished in April 2005 and the CD was released in early 2006 on El Toro records. The sublime CD cover was designed by Mighty Sam and El Cheapo (Design and pictures).

Charlie Hightone and the Rock-Its' powerful rockabilly band formed at the beginning of 2002 with members of other groups dedicated in the Spanish scene such as: " Nitemares" , " Jett Darren & The Doggone Riders " or " Anabelle and the Rock-A-Belles ". With the experienced basic rhythm of Juan Fresneda (drums, washboard ) and Adolfo Ruiz (double-bass),we added the elegant and powerful guitar of Ricardo Cuenca , concluding the band with the (without a doubt ) best male voice in the Spanish Rockabilly scene : Ivan Vela (vocals , acoustic guitar ). Throughout a year of concerts and mini tours directly sharing the stage as much inside as out of Spain, with international bands such as Graddy Rusters " or " Cherry Casino" and with a composed repertoire by chosen themes of 50s Wild Rockabilly we incorporate to the band a second electric guitar and Lap Steel : Emilio Fuentes who gives strength to the sound and a definitive form to the project. In 2005 throughout a series of exciting concerts and acts in International Festivals next to groups such as the quality of "Jets" , "Space Cadets" , "Restless" or "Carlos and the Bandidos" record their first CD with Sleazy Records, compositions of this work appear in various compilations, as much in Spanish as in American, being praised by all critics.
