The Mad Men was formed somewhere in 1996 when a group of friends and rock 'n' roll fans decided to start a band and tried playing the music they loved so much. The first line-up was actually without drums with Darko Grošek playing the lead guitar, Branko Radovancevic singing, Goran Margeta playing the rhythm guitar and Mario Zuvela playing the double bass. Soon a drummer Marko Tizaj joined The Mad Men. The band stayed in this line-up for about a year and played gigs and rock 'n' roll parties in the area. After a while double bass player Mario left because of his other obligations with his other bands (at the time Born Losers, Cool Shakes, Mississippi Queen) and Goran, who was a rhythm guitarist until then, took up double bass.

A mere listing of the musicians would seem by itself to ensure the prospective listeners of many moments of early 60´s beat! They all have shown, in performances all over europe, their concern for certain elements essential to good music, and especially to rock´n´roll: an avoidance of the affected, pretentious "avantgarde" approach which characterizes some modern 60´s groups of today; and yet in reference to the latter, an awareness of the progressive nature of music, of such inevitable movements as the reaction of the early 50´s leading towards rockabilly, or of the early 60´s leading towards beat and garage. These factors embody the musical ideas of the members of the MONTESAS.

In their homeland germany, the raw and puristic beat of the MONTESAS is called "Star-Club-style" beat, comparing them with the wild rock´n´roll bands who performed the st. pauli circuit in hamburg´s nightlife during the early 60´s (like casey jones and the governors or the early beatles…to name just a few!). With their homegrown authentic style, the MONTESAS play a sincere and extremly danceable R´n´B, without just copying their ancestors. A little drumset, an elité bassguitar, a guild guitar and the famous east-german "weltmeister"-organ is all these youngsters need to raise a twister in the ballroom…. From hawaiian style to hillbilly and rockabilly - Flatfoot Shakers singer Kieron McDonald is backed up by The Roundup Boys.

Kieron lived abroad in Europe from '91 to '95 where he was able to soak up influences (and some fine German beer) from the European Rockabilly scene. Upon returning to his homeland in Australia in '96 he started laying down the foundations for the Flatfoot Shakers by building up an initial set of obscure and classic '50s Rockabilly/Rock'n'Roll. Kieron spent many a night as a young nipper listening to his Dads old Country records which led to other discoveries such as Rockabilly and Rhythm and Blues. Artists of influence include Johnny Horton, early Elvis and that great Sun Rockabilly sound.
Kieron is the singer/song writer for the band and loves sitting back with a glass of bourbon on the weekend listening to his old records...

Kieron recently played the High Rockabilly festival in Spain (Sep '05) supported by Spains fantastic trio "The Nu Niles" during a recent visit to Europe. At that time he was invited to record a solo album for Rhythm Bomb Records in Germany with local house band "The Roundup Boys".

The results of this recording sessions can be found on this little platter called Island Girl.

Man, you know – you should just put this writing down and listen to the latest record by the Nu Niles, because that is where you’ll get the information you really need.

The Nu Niles formed over ten years ago, they split up, they re-formed, members came and went … they were finally put to death by their creator Mario Cobo, but they just wouldn’t stay dead. That’s sort of where the title for their last record comes from – “You Didn’t Come to My Funeral”. In a way this record picks up where their last LP “Destination Now” left off: like the slogan says, Authentic 50s Punk. One engineer’s boot stuck firmly and proudly back in greased-up clattering rockabilly, the other up on the monitor of live guitars-too-high punk rock –Johnny Cash from Chaos. But this record is something else again. Sure, there’s a line from the Nu Niles’ first LP “Good Luck…” (1996) through 2001’s “Get Set, Go!” and 2004’s “Destination Now” but now it’s solidified into something unmistakably Nu Niles and only Nu Niles: 12 tracks which wear their varied influences on their sleeves but really hold together like a gang, all with the same aim, all taking different routes to get there.

Anybody can write a list of bands they claim to be like, anyone can say they play like X, Y and Z (insert cool name), anyone can say their band rocks, they’re original, they’re new … whatever: but only Mario Cobo, Ivan Kovacevic and Blás Picón can just keep their mouths shut and let the record speak for itself. No advertising needed: stop reading, start listening.

With 3 Rhythm Bomb-only bonus recording, the boys whipped up another 14 tracks for their second full-length album. Ten Maki originals were newly-recorded, along with songs by Marty Robbins, Fred Netherton, Jim Nesbitt, and the Jewels, that make up a rockin' and swingin' combination of sounds. Tichy and Bruce return with a vengeance, to lay down their best performances yet. Staying true to the trio's artistic licenses (yes, they've been renewed) everything was cut without overdubbing and sent straight to WSDS studios, where Keith Jason oversaw the addition of Ampex tape echo.

Bones Maki & the Sun Dodgers perform rockabilly music with the same instrumentation that the music was born from: electric guitar, string bass and acoustic guitar. You'll notice that a drum kit was left out ... but once you hear their music, you won't miss it! This trio has a full rock-a-billy sound that refers to records made in the mid-1950s, including the energy and lowdown feeling of that raucous noise. Since 2001, the Sun Dodgers have been swinging high and tearing it down around Detroit, Michigan, and in selected cities across the Great 48.

Grounded in western swing and rockabilly music, Craig "Bones" Maki sings, plays and writes tunes that reminds one of sounds that flourished during the 1950s.

sweeties to shake their stuff to, screamin’ solos and sexy shouters. Should you put this platter on to get your house party started? If you like a great big beat you should!

Jeff Potter has several obvious influences such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, The Big Bopper, The Blasters. His recording has a timeless style, though the 50’s make up the backbone of this cool cat.

Within this big beat you can feel the 40’s jump swing right into the 70’s ted revival. Jeff Potter is an outstanding musician who has been a player in the U.S. for many years. Throughout his career he has enjoyed many rave reviews in the international press regarding his bilities. He selected truly talented support (including Betsy-Dawn Williams and Graham Tichy ) to craft this exciting CD. The arrangments and sound quality attest to his efforts and experience. There are 15 fantastic tunes, each stands on it’s own. There isn’t any fluff or fodder to fill this recording out. Every song on this CD tells a great story and you will want to dance or dream to them over and over again. If you dig piano pumpers you must own this CD.

"High Octane" is a jiving, bluesy tune with brilliant piano work that the Killer would appreciate. Try and sit still to this number, it’s a great dance tune. "Time On My Hands" is a slow swinging, big hunk of love, west coast strolling ballad. Sweet. The title track "She’s Got A Great Big Beat" couldn’t get any fatter without bursting through the speaker seams. This jiver is showing it’s stuff. Tight, bright and wailing. The tune is FAT.
Like instrumentals? "The Romp" has it all, beautiful guitar lines, skin solos and bass work that is fine. A medium paced jiver that is cool as a cucumber.

"Great Big Beat" is the CD for folks who want to dance, party or make out in a ‘55 Ford. Jeff Potter has a sound that suited and booted teds will love the same as rock and roll swingsters. “Great Big Beat” is a great big record from a truly talented artist. Jeff Potter is IT with a really BIG beat.
