Louisiana had a long heritage of making exciting and innovative music but rarely recorded in the first half of the 20th Century until Specialty and Imperial "discovered" New Orleans Rhythm & Blues; but the field was also open for a more rural based young artists ready to claim the rich seam of Country and Rockabilly. This volume on our regional Rock And Roll series is about those early Bayou State rockers.

Johnny Kidd and the Pirates recorded some of the very best British rock'n'roll and rhythm & blues of that era. The Pirates also made the first recordings on their own without Kidd in 1964. The single "My babe" / "Casting My Spell" featured Spence also on vocals, and is ever since considered a classic.

Tragically, Johnny Kidd was killed in a car-accident in Lancashire in October 7th 1966. He was just 30 years old.

In December 1976 The Pirates featuring Mick, Johnny and Frank returned with a vengeance. A one-off gig was a huge success, wowing the press and fans alike, and so their never-ending tour started. There is a saying in
the music business; "never follow the Pirates!". Anyone who has seen them in action will understand that they were unbeatable on stage, and to follow them was definitely a mission impossible and an artistic suicide.

In November 1978 The Pirates took to the road for a four show tour in America, and had a big time there. Everything about the tour was huge; the venues, stages, audiences, limousines, hotel suites, cigars, bars... At this point the Pirates had been working relentlessly for two more years, playing hundreds of gigs and somehow finding time to record and release both of the "Skull" albums. So when the call from America came, they were up for it, ready to rock'n'roll and play better than ever. Luckily one of these legendary gigs was recorded, but it took some 30 years for Johnny Spence to come across the tape from his archive collection.

(Leadguitar), Andy Hümmer (Doublebass), and Holger Stretz, Stefan Dürrbeck (Drums). a few Weeks and a Demotape later, they were booked all over in Germany, Austria, Belgium and Holland to perform their high voltage Show.

In Fall 2011 they signed to Rhythm Bomb Records and their first Album, called " The rockin beat of...Marc & the Wild Ones" followed.

But most of all, the Piccadilly Bullfrogs are nothing less than one of the most exciting rockabilly combo to appear in years, yes sir! Two guitars, one double bass and tons of talent. Their debut album features 12 tracks, eight originals and four covers. It’s been entirely recorded in single takes with no overdubs, in glorious mono on an old tape machine with a "ridiculously cheap and nasty microphone (...) and the end results are at the very lowest end of the lo-fi spectrum!". So you’ve been warned, if you expect slick production that comes from a multi tracks studio and lots of overdubs this album is not for you. But if you dig music that breathes life, with raw edges that takes you back to the glorious days of Sun or Meteor, jump on this one.

If you think that Rock’n’Roll brings fun to your spirit and Blues invigorates your soul, well, this is definitely your band!!!!
The MAD TUBES are a trio from Milan who play great Rock’n’Roll deeply based on blues influences. Rockabilly and country are also often involved creating a unique and explosive groove.
The fact that there is not just one lead vocalist in the band allows for a variety of music and makes the live performances even more enjoyable for the audiences.
Two members of the HOT TUBES, Max Pierini and Davide “DiceDado” Bianchi, formed the MAD TUBES in November 2008 when their band was booked for a country and rock’n’roll gig, which was very different from the typical 50’s blues music that the HOT TUBES usually played.
The gig ended up being a huge success and the two musicians had a lot of fun, so they decided to keep playing that kind of music. Eventually, drummer Laurent “Le Mapo” Mapelli was added to the combo, consolidating the groove of the band which they describe as “Rockin’ Roots”, hence the title of the album recorded in the VINTAGE ROOTS RECORDS studio.

Bass player Pete Pritchard’s career credits reads like a who’s who of rock’n’ roll. It includes Eric Clapton, “Ten years after” guitar virtuoso Alvin Lee, Billy Swan, and Chuck Berry.
However, Pete is perhaps best known for touring and recording with Elvis Presley’s Legendary original musicians. For the last eighteen years Pete has been the bass player behind the greatest rock’n’roll guitar player of all time……Scotty Moore. The Presley connection continues with Pete working alongside the Jordanaires, DJ Fontana, James Burton, Glen D Hardin and Boots Randolph.

Now Pete steps out of the shadows with his great new solo album “Beat the blues“. Pete shows his versatility with a mix of covers and original songs, while staying true to the roots music he loves. Pete’s friends all lined up to lend a hand and the album boasts wonderful contributions from Scotty Moore, Boots Randolph, Billy Swan, Alvin Lee and Roy Orbison guitarist Bucky Barrett.

In the early 1970's, Pete, along with Drummer Terry Earl, formed his first band, the "Flying Saucers",who went on to record several albums for labels such as Sony CBS and EMI, and appeared in the film "Blue Suede shoes". For several years the "Saucers" toured relentlessly, Rocking the clubs and festivals across Europe, They also toured with Bill Haley and the Comets and Pete provided the bass for Chuck Berry on U.K and European tours, and appeared in the film "Blue Suede Shoes". In the eighties, Pete co-founded "Alligator Records", Which, gave young up and coming bands such as The Polecats, The Meteors and Johnny Key their first chance to record.

Although no longer a member of the Flying Saucers, Pete continued to perform with bands across Europe and in 1988 began working with renowned Nashville vocal quartet the Jordanaires. This continued with a UK tour in 1992 which included Elvis Presley Guitarist and drummer Scotty Moore and D.J.Fontana. Pete continues to tour and record with Scotty and D.J., and is a regular visitor to the USA, performing concerts and working in Scotty's studio with many great musicians.

In 2005 Pete performed at Abbey road studios, London with Scotty Moore, Eric Clapton, Ronnie Wood and Albert Lee for the DVD release "Tribute to the King". The DVD also includes performances by Mark Knopfler, Bill Wyman, David Gilmour and Martin Taylor.
2007 saw Pete Perform with Scotty Moore and the Jordanaires at the Peabody hotel, Memphis TN during the August Elvis Presley 30th anniversary celebrations. Also in 2007, Pete toured the UK and Ireland with Guitar legend James Burton and singer, songwriter Billy Swan.

Motel Men is a modern day Belgian roots-trio formed out of love for the classic sounds of the fifties. Their minimalistic approach aims for maximum intensity and variety.
Motel Men take you from a nocturnal truck stop, over a lonely hilltop and down to a caveman's party. There's echoes of old country, rockabilly and blues, but above all, you hear three men in love with a good song and a pure sound.

Since the end of 2007 they have been making their way through dim-lit bars, festivals and rockabilly meetings, with just one goal : to break and shake your cheatin' hearts.

This debut album was recorded, mixed and produced by the Motel Men in their own studio in 2009, and released in May 2010.

Many years ago Jackson Sloan was the driving force on the Jump Jive circuit with his top band "RENT PARTY". Featuring Alan Savage, Steve Weston, Andy Stevens, Laurence Parry and John Wilmot, they built a solid reputation in the UK as well as in Europe, topping the bill on countless Festivals and in many clubs, they appeared on many TV shows and released four singles and two albums.

In 1988 RENT PARTY broke up and Jackson found himself working in many different musical areas. He recorded the 12" dance floor classic "Night in Tunisia" with DJ and Latin percussionist 'Snowboy'. In 1989 Jackson recorded a solo album called "Old Angel Midnight" with top British jazz musicians. This received great response from fans and critics alike, the album has been re-released recently in Japan and Hungry and has been very successful.

After spending many years in the jazz field Jackson has decided to get back to his roots of Jump-Jive, Blues and Boogie-Woogie R&B so he phoned drummer, Alan Savage, and asked if he would be interested in getting a band together. Alan jumped at the chance, having had great times together in Rent Party, and knowing that with the right musicians behind him, Jackson would once more become a driving force in the current Jump-Jive, Swing, Boogie-Woogie World. The result was a great new band: Oo-Bop Sh'Bam!
