British Psychobilly and Neo-Rockabilly greats from the Western Star archives.
Among the crazy sounds contained here are bands old and new. Luna Vegas hail from the Midlands and originally booked in to record some demos, but impressed Wilson sufficiently to secure an album deal with Western Star. These tracks are a sneak preview of their forthcoming album due out in early 2008. Bristol based Valentine Villains attracted the label’s attention in 2006 and soon a recording session was arranged which yielded the three songs included here. Neck-Valve is a hybrid concentration of unpleasantness, combining Grindcore with Psychobilly. They have recorded a handful of tracks for Western Star and other labels in recent years.
Judder & the Jack Rabbits recorded their album
for Cherry Bomb Recordings (a subsidiary of the Cherry Red group), at Western Star Studio. The tracks contained here are from their debut album ‘All In’ The band have since had major airplay on BBC Radio One and were even invited to the BBC studio’s for a Radio One session which was broadcast in April 2007. Henry & the Bleeders recorded half a dozen tracks at Western Star in 2006. They also have a full album out on Darrel Higham’s Embassy records. Chuck & the Crack-Pipes is a side project between Frantic Flintstones front man Chuck Harvey, Alan Wilson and a select band of Western Star musicians. Their full album ‘One Lung Down’ is out on Western Star. Bands don’t come much madder that Pretty Grim. Fronted by scene stalwart Paul Nevin, this band are often found at Western Star and are well worth checking out live. The Rock-It Dogs first came to Western Star a few years back to record their debut CD ‘Chills, Thrills and Blood Spills’ for German label Crazy Love records. Since then they have returned on a few occasions. They recently booked in to record with their new line up, but the two tracks contained here were the very last songs ever recorded with their original ’…Blood Spills’ line up.
The Sharks’ first album was released on Nervous records in 1983. The band quit live shows in 1999 with founder member Alan Wilson deciding to hang up his trusty Telecaster in favour of running the studio.
However, The Sharks have recorded together since and here we have their version of a Screaming Lord Sutch number, recorded as part of a Western Star tribute to cult producer Joe Meek. The Bad Detectives are not strictly a Psychobilly outfit, yet their songs are not that far removed from the genre and so, are well worth including on a compilation such as this. They have two albums on Western Star and tracks from these have often often been aired on various UK radio stations.
Frenzy have been releasing big selling records for over 20 years and are still very active on the live circuit both at home and overseas. Their track contained here is taken from their most recent album ‘Nitro Boy’ recorded at Western Star, released on Crash records. Front man Steve Whitehouse has also recently recorded a solo album at Western Star which will also eventually surface on Crash.
